What are LED Video Walls?

LED video walls are comprised of Direct View LED displays (also called DV) that work together as a unit to display content as if it were a single screen. LED video walls are incredibly efficient because each component is responsible for conducting and emitting its own light.

Direct view LED isn’t actually a new technology, it’s been used for decades in large outdoor signage such as malls, stadiums and casinos but all of this changed with the recent development of very small LEDs, which have allowed manufacturers to produce much higher-resolution LED displays.

An LED video wall consists of hundreds of tiny LEDs (light emitting diodes) mounted directly on a flat panel. Each LED emits coloured light when a particular voltage is applied to it. Clusters of red, green, and blue LEDs are creating the full colour pixels needed to produce an image. Since the LEDs themselves produce the pixels, the size of the LEDs and the distance between them – “pixel pitch” determines the resolution of the display. Displays with very small LEDs and a fine pixel pitch will produce higher resolutions than displays with bigger LEDs and a large pixel pitch.

Some LED displays come with a mounting system built in, while others require the use of a separate mount. The narrow profile of LED displays allows for virtually limitless mounting options, including freestanding, wall-mounted, ceiling mounted, curved, and more.

TYPES OF TRUSSING

Deco Truss

Decorative use only, for displays and internal architectural touches in shops, restaurants, bars and clubs. The Deco truss market is unregulated, so while some brands and suppliers may be quality rated and have reasonable weight loading, others will have no form of certification whatsoever and are not suitable for use in public places.

Ladder Truss

The simplest and cheapest form of the industry standard 50mm truss systems, it’s the perfect choice for builds and structures where maximum clear spans and loading are less important factors than appearance or available space, such as exhibition floors and retail displays where the floor space is a premium.

With a large selection of fittings, angled pieces and straight lengths, Ladder truss is very flexible in allowing strong and dependable structures to be created in limited space.

Triangular Truss

Probably the most commonly seen of all the truss types, Tri truss gives you the added stability of a triple pole construct, which gives you significant increases in weight loading, torsional rigidity, and in long length resistance to deflection.

The additional surface area gives you multiple mounting and equipment attachment points. Corner and mid ‘Tee’ sections are available in both ‘Apex Up’ and ‘Apex Down’ configurations depending on the nature of the structure being created and its intended use which can be for both practical and aesthetic reasons.

Tri Truss has a visual appeal of its own, making it eye catching as well as being functional. It has a definite ‘industrial chic’ to its design and its loading capacity allows a large number of lighting fixtures, visual displays and audio equipment to be mounted safely at height, maximizing your available space and giving you the reliability in daily use that comes with a product at this level.

 Square Truss

The strongest and largest of the standard truss designs, Square or Quad truss as it’s also known is the industry’s main truss system for larger builds, rental use and for stage and theatre work.

It offers clear run loading spans of up to 12 meters and lends itself to many different functions and tasks.

Used for exhibition stands, lighting rigs, fashion runway frameworks, audio system flying such as Line Arrays, and for the temporary structures of festival stage roofing systems and stage lighting rigs, it’s the ultimate all rounder tool for the entertainment and business worlds to create durable and functional frameworks with the safe loading and durability to fit into any situation.

The square design eliminates any apex or orientation issues and the large selection of adapters, mounting plates; corner and joining pieces mean that structures are easily accommodated to the available space.

Uses for Trussing

TRUSSING FOR LIGHTING

Long before it found use as a framework product for exhibition booths and stage roof systems, trussing sections were used in theatres and music venues as lighting rigs. Starting off as modified steel scaffold scenery poles, a purpose built aluminum version was soon developed for its obvious benefits of significant weight saving and cheaper cost.

Suitability

Professional lighting units for the most part are designed to be suspended at height from built in handles or chassis points, and easily secured with the industry standard G shape fixing clamps onto pole shaped structures. The nature of a standard stage lighting rig layout means a strong straight fixing system is perfect for the easy location of multiple fixtures, with the clamp fixings and truss surface area allowing easy sideways positioning and position changes, something not possible from units mounted direct to the walls or ceiling.

Versatility

Other benefits of trussing is in all its forms, even ladder truss if installed horizontally, is that it can function as a cable management tray for all the attached lighting fixtures, so the multitude of power and DMX control lines are easily dealt with, and remain quickly accessible for servicing and fixture changes.

It also means that the entire rig can be lowered to floor height in one go, making repairs, troubleshooting or layout changes as simple and safe as possible.

 Performance

The loading capability of modern professional aluminum truss is considerable, with for example a 6m width of our square / quad truss having a total mass loading of 632 kg when the equipment is spanned into a safe fixture pattern.

This provides more than ample scope required for the use of any luminaires on the market, with the average weight now being 10 kg or less for standard range products, and 30-40 kg for the industrial theatre lights.

Diversity in use

For performance lighting rigs and stage shows, trussing can be supplied in circular and semicircular format in a range of diameters, made up from curved sectional pieces.

Rock bands such as Queen and Pink Floyd have made show features from electrically lowering and tilting circle trussing with its edge loaded with moving head lights or fixed spots, and using the center section as a video projection surface through use of canvas. The truss strength and durability in use allows this movement whilst under load to be possible.

Trussing and performance lighting go hand in hand, they always have and always will as it offers the strongest and simplest solution to the mounting and display of multiple effects or area defining lighting solutions. Lighting Rigs

Trussing and lighting are old friends, having been paired up for decades in theatres and professional stage shows the world over as it provides the simplest and most practical solution to the flying of multiple lighting fixtures.

Many large stage shows feature fully electric winch operated truss circles or rectangular truss lighting rigs that are raised and lowered throughout a performance both for artistic effect and to aid in easy set changes, and also for mid performance repair and fixture replacement should it be required by raising the truss up into the ceiling where it can be attached to the fixed position lighting gantries, something not possible with wall fixtures or set position truss. It’s structural ratings compared to its overall weight make it perfect for chain lifting and winching as it adds very little weight over that of the lighting units attached, and its tubular design offers an infinite amount of support and fixing points for the lifting equipment.

Durability and Longevity

You mention aluminum to people and they often think of something that’s not as strong as say steel or that can be easily dented or damaged like the bodywork of a car.

So for starters, Truss is really really tough stuff.

Depending on the required project specifications, this can be either a 2mm or 3mm wall thickness to the tubing sections, both offering enormous strength with minimal weight penalty and giving huge levels of performance in both structural rigidity and deflection under loading.

TRUSS FOR DJS

For the modern working Dj, one that’s taking their own rig out for events for use as stage truss lighting and DJ truss, the choice of trussing over the more traditional stands and lighting bars is a big one to take, and many have either been put off thinking it’s too much for one person to handle, or that it’s too expensive and not worth bothering with.

Visual Appeal

Trussing looks expensive. It has a natural awe factor to its structure and just looks like it means business. When compared to the average cheap lighting T bar or Dj stand its heft and quality stand out and give off a strong and professional look to your rig.

It’s as much a statement of your own attitude as it is a functional item. It can be dressed with custom fit fabric sleeve which can then be internally lit to great effect, it can be powder coated, or be used in its natural state, with all having their own charm.

We all love our water activities, it’s sporty relaxing and inspirational. We purchase boats, jet skies and other water crafts and take them to our waterfront properties to use them. Which kind of dock should you choose, what are the options? There’s wood and aluminum , there are Aluminum frames and aluminum Truss docks, and then there’s the decking. Determining your dock’s needs

Okay, where to start? The first thing is to determine what you’re going to use your dock for. Your intended use will dictate size, shape and style. Do you want a large sundeck to accommodate a lot of people relaxing on the dock? Or, if you’re only using the dock for boat access, you may only need a simple, straight dock.

Is aluminum truss dock right for you

Then again, how many boats do you have? If you have multiple boats, you may want slips to make it easy to get in and out of your boats. And if you plan to tie your canoe, kayak or small fishing boat up to your dock, be sure the dock is longer than your boat. wide enough to allow plenty of room to set down gear and for people to get in and out of the boat. People with larger motor boats likely will need to shop for a larger, fixed dock, the size, cost and construction materials of which can vary greatly.

If your family of four is just going to swim and fish from your dock, you might go with a dock that sits low in the water and is 7½ feet from the shore to the end of the dock and as wide as you feel you need.

Though there are many varieties of docks, each of them can be placed in one of two categories: removable docks and permanent docks.

Permanent docks are self-explanatory — they are installed securely into the ground and the structure is intended to remain there permanently. Removable docks are typically intended to be semi-permanent and can be expanded, reconfigured or removed if necessary. The first step is to ask a few questions about your particular location and needs when choosing a dock type.

Types of docks & common materials

1. FLOATING DOCKS

These docks are large platforms that float on the water’s surface. Floating dock structures are versatile and rise or fall with the water level, helping them adapt to nearly any condition. They are also ideal solutions for sea, lake or river beds that are unable to support the installation of a fixed dock. Floating docks are available as pre-built sections that can be attached in a variety of configurations and shapes.

2. PILING DOCKS

Piling docks are constructed by inserting large wooden beams called pilings deep into the ground under the water. The dock is then connected to the piling. Piling docks are strong and stable, and can withstand strong currents. However, they are expensive to build and maintain, and can’t adjust as water levels change. They work best for larger boats or as a fishing dock.

When choosing a piling dock, it’s imperative that you plan out its construction thoroughly. The success of this dock rests on its structural integrity. Any mistakes or cut corners could ultimately cause thousands of dollars worth of damage. Wood posts could rot if not properly treated, so a fiberglass alternative may be used. You also need to protect the pilings from other destructive organisms and protect the piling caps from harmful UV rays.

3. PIPE DOCKS

Pipe docks are similar to piling docks but are usually built using an aluminum truss or frame with removable docking. This makes them an easy-to-build and cost-effective docking system. Pipe docks work well in shallow water and need to be removed in the fall to prevent freezing from damaging the pipes. Since the surface doesn’t make significant contact with the land or water, it is one of the least environmentally impactful docking options. Pipe docks can become submerged easily. Set up and dismantling is easy and usually requires no tools

Wood vs Aluminum Truss Dock: Cost, Durability and Safety

Aluminum is a strong material that is well suited to the outdoors and exposure to water. Aluminum docks are sturdy, simple and light. This is where they have an advantage over wood docks.

No matter what type of dock you purchase, external components such as posts, brackets, and fasteners that are attached to the frame can scratch boats and even hurt people. This is something to keep in mind when building or installing a dock. Stage Lighting and the introduction of the LED

Advantages of LED Stage lights

Low Power Consumption – Because the LED uses a fraction of the power of an normal light bulb (lamp), the power consumption of LED lighting fixtures is very small, meaning you can use a lot of fixtures on small power supply such as a 13A domestic socket. This is great for small band lighting rigs and the disco/party DJ.

Low Heat Radiation – Although LED stage lighting does produce heat; the fixtures produce light without getting extremely hot. Modern stage lighting lamps produce more heat (and light) than they ever have and this has been coupled with improved lantern casings to minimize the risk of burning the operator. There are, however, some environments where the low heat properties of LED stage lighting are desirable.

Lightweight and Portable – The hardware that LED lihgts are packaged in does not need to be heavy and, although the various power supplies and elements all add weight, LED units are usually fairly light.

Maintenance – No more lamps to change or filters to clean. Professional quality LED lights have an estimated life of over 50,000 hours.

Color Effects (Multi Color) – The most common way for LED lights to be used for stage lighting purposes is using a combination of different colored LEDs. A fixture with all three lighting primary colors, Red, Green and Blue (RGB) LEDs blended together in different combinations gives the lighting designer loads of color choices. This is using a principle called Additive Color Mixing, where the colored LEDs mix on any surface that reflects the light.

Small and Compact – LED lighting fixtures can be made in small, discreet packages that suit applications where size and brightness are important such as exhibitions stands.

High Brightness – This really comes down to the ratio of light brightness to power consumption. The new high-powered LEDs are very bright considering small amount of electrical power they use.

Par Can / PAR Lamp – Stands for “parabolic aluminized reflector”,it’s a simple, inexpensive and popular flood light for concerts or touring.Similar to a conventional incandescent wash light, but using LED light the color and brightness can be controlled remotely.
Par Cans are most commonly available in 3 types – Tri, Quad or Hex. Tri lights have 3 colors available – red, green and blue. Quad lights have 4 colors – red, green, blue and white. Hex lights have 6 colors – red, green, blue, white, amber and UV.

** Outside of the visible light spectrum, some LED stage lights also support Ultra Violet (UV) emitters as part of their color armory.  However, the UV LEDs still aren’t a patch on an old-fashioned UV canon or even UV strip light as they produce too many light waves in the visible violet spectrum and this can wash out the ‘black light’ effect. **  

Profile – A profile fixture allows a perfect beam or ‘pool’ of light to be projected, they are sometimes referred to as ‘spotlights’. The size of the pool can be changed, sometimes with a zoom facility, but generally by changing lenses in the nose of the fixture. Available as a pure white or multi-color output.
Profile fixtures also allow the use of ‘gobos’ – a gobo is a glass or metal disc incorporating a design, which can be projected onto a wall or floor.

Fresnel/PC Spot – This basic spotlight’s name comes from its lens type. Fresnel/PC lights project a distinct beam of light, although with less control and less well defined edges than a Profile fixture. Used in conjunction with lighting gels to create innumerable colors and atmospheres on stage, Fresnel lighting is soft and rich and provides most of the ‘fill’ in stage lighting.
The Fresnel/PC fixtures offer a manual zoom facility (set-up with a control knob on the light itself) and a motorized remote zoom adjustment, controlled via the desk.

Ellipsoidal Spotlight, or Leko
These lamps are versatile and able to be highly controlled – A Leko provide a harder-edged, stronger light whose beams can be easily manipulated or changed with shutters, gobos (cut out shapes and patterns), and more. Your basic stage lighting setup is usually accomplished with a mixture of Fresnels and Ellipsoidal spots.

Strips, Battens or Bars – A linear bar of lights, ideal for up lighting or down lighting flat areas such as drapes or scenery. Using a suitable lighting control desk, the color and brightness can be controlled remotely.

Moving Head (Wash) – Similar to a Par Can fixture, the colors can be controlled, but with further control functions allowing the beam to be directed up, down, left or right. Some Moving Head Wash fixtures can adjusted the size of the beam with a ‘zoom’.

Moving Head (Beam) – A very versatile light with a range of pre-installed colors and patterns which can be controlled by the lighting desk, as well as allowing the beam to be directed up, down, left or right. Some Moving Head Beam fixtures also allow bespoke metal or glass gobos to be inserted for special theatrical effects, logos, etc.

Blinders & Matrix Panels – These are large panel-type LED lights, suitable for wash lighting a wide area or creating dramatic effects.

Follow Spot – A Follow Spot is normally placed on a tripod and allows you to track a performer around the stage or even around the room.Follow spots are large, oversized, separate and expensive spotlights. LED follow spots, advantage over conventional incandescent, it runs cool, lighter and use less power.
