How to hang lighting truss from the ceiling? A question we’re asked by our partners many times.

2020 has been a challenging year for the Entertainment industry. While concerts and festivals are being canceled, we are looking to permanent locations that are quickly converted to “Insta” broadcasting studios. You see them everywhere, your local house of worship and in the boardroom.

This post will break down the fundamentals of how to hang lighting truss. The rigging that is recommended and accessories you could use for hanging a lighting truss from a ceiling.

We think it would be wise to start by defining the task of how to hang lighting truss, with a few questions to ask yourself.

Whats my pick point ? When we say “pick point” we mean that you need to first look up and see what kind of structure you want to hang your lighting truss on. Is the structure made of steel, are you in a commercial unit? Or do you need to drill studs into concrete and create a pick point.

These variants will have an effect on how much weight you should put on your lighting truss.

What am I planning on hanging on the truss ? Whether it’s Led stage lights , professional speakers or LED video wall panels. You will need to calculate the max weight you’re planning to hang on the lighting truss.

Lighting truss usually have deflection charts that are certified by TUV. These charts adhere to specific trusses and manufacturers and tell you how many points you would need to hang your lighting truss off of , based on the model of lighting truss you’ve purchased and weight planned to be hung off it.

So you can see that, with the above specific truss, if you have a span of 20 ft GTR G34P lighting truss hung over 2 pick points. You will be able to hang a total of 4550 lbs divided every ft by 231lb. I decided to hang something in the middle? The max load would be 2277 lb and the bend/deflection would be 1.1 inches. Which is the maximum safe allowed deflection for this lighting truss at this specific span length.

Another important thing we would like you to know is the recommended ways to choke the truss when trying to create a connection to the pick point.

How to build a wall for a trade show booth with trade show trusses

Trade show booths come in all shapes and sizes, which materials are available for you to build a trade show booth with. What are some appealing features of trade show trusses to get people to stop at your booth.

While writing this article in January 2021, I keep thinking how the world of trade shows would look in the future. Trade show booths were a hot topic before the cancelation of all trade shows in 2020. And while I am very optimistic that we will get back to how it used to be, it would probably take a while until that happens. Meanwhile we can use this pause in time to learn different designs. So we can use this knowledge to better our presentation when it comes time.

Trade show trusses

I always prefer to use aluminum lighting truss to create the foundation of my trade show booth. Trade show trusses come in different shapes, lengths and sizes. They all have a few things in common.

You will find they are very light weighted to transport. As you assemble them you will gain the flexibility of various sizes and shapes. And very importantly while you use them your aluminum trade show trusses will draw the attention of the spectator, making your trade show booth look big robust and shiny.

A super important advantage of aluminum lighting truss, is the weight capacity over distance that the structure can carry.

The structural character of the truss makes it the perfect stuff to build your trade show booth with. Whether your booth is 10ft x 10 ft , 20 ft x 20 ft or even massive 40ft x 40ft , you will find that the loading capacity for you to hang your exhibits is bigger than any other solution.

Aluminum lighting truss comes in different configurations below is a few different types, and my experience with them.

Conical truss

Conical truss is a system of aluminum lighting truss that connects to one another without any external accessories. This truss comes with conical and pins, has the best horizontal weight distribution and is very easy to assemble.

Bolt Truss

Bolt lighting truss uses a bolt and nut system to connect between the trusses. This lighting truss system is a little more cost effective. Bolt lighting truss requires tools like ratchets and keys to assemble it takes a little longer as well as many little pieces that can go missing.

I Beam Truss

The simplest and cheapest form of the industry standard 50mm truss systems, I usually chose it for builds and structures where maximum clear spans and loading are less important than appearance or available space.

Triangular Truss

Probably the most commonly seen of all the truss types, Tri truss gives you the added stability of a triple pole construct, which gives you significant increases in weight loading, torsional rigidity, and in long length resistance to deflection.

Square Truss

Square truss is the strongest and largest of the standard truss designs. The industry defaults to using Square truss, as a result of it’s clear run loading spans of up to 40 feet and how it lends itself in many different functions and tasks.

Build a wall in your trade show booth

Trade show trusses can create a perfect canvas to make your visions and designs come through with ease. After easily putting together your truss structure, outlining and building a wall is simple and there are many options.

I usually recommend to just hang the sectional piece off of the truss square. The truss square gives you a perfect platform in terms of booth shape and weight distribution. Which gives you the freedom to hang lighter or heavier materials.

Drape

Most trade show booths use drapery to create a divider and feel of a wall. Show drapes can be easily bought and purchased. The drapes come in different colours, and weights and heights. All drapes come with tie strings which make it very easy to tie it around the trade show trusses and create a wall.

LED Video wall

The truss square has a weight loading capacity that allows for LED video walls to be hung off it and used as wall dividers. In recent years the use of these LED video walls has become more common due to it’s availability and price drop. You can project images and videos on them on and add a wow effect to your booth

Other materials to build walls

Once you assemble your truss square then your imagination can run free. The trade show trusses have many clamps and accessories. You can hang vertical and horizontal beams off of it and attach all kinds of materials. What video resolution to make for LED video wall?

I’d like to share with you guys an email conversation with a pub owner. He wants to open the patio for the summer install an LED video wall and show sports and movies to his patrons. He called us to learn more on the options and the video resolution needed to make for the LED video wall.

Hey Ryan,

thanks for the quick phone call yesterday. Your project is really interesting for us, I really appreciate the opportunity to advise and maybe be further involved.

In short, LED video wall resolution on the technical level –

When it comes to LED video walls generally, Outdoor wall cabinets are spec’d for brightness and waterproofing. They are generally used with greater distances from the audience. To achieve the desired brightness the leds are larger and pixel pitch is lower. Due to the greater distance from the audience there is no interference with the picture quality. So for example an industry standard 5mm outdoor video wall has about 48 pixels per foot. In this case a 10’ x 6’ wall will be 480 x 288 px. . At a minimum viewing distance on 30’ it will look like one picture. Usually a size like this is more suitable for texts and banners and less to dynamic sports video due to lack of resolution . These systems are designed to be large to allow for the required resolution.

As a general side note when it comes to video anything that is over 720 pixels vertically is considered High Def, anything under is Standard Def.

Indoor LED Video walls are spec’d for closer distances from the audiences and higher quality picture. Being an emitting light technology, LED Video wall are still at lease 5 times brighter than any TV. To achieve that smaller LEDS are used. Indoor LED Video walls can reach up to 0.9mm pixel pixel. Indoor LED video wall cabinets are usually quite a bit water resistant from the front. So are commonly used in outdoor applications as well. Usually to use an indoor LED wall outside, the cabinets are protected in the back by a tarp or even better installed under a canopy.
